I see the point of this restriction in the sense that you don't want people at Blizz looking at the forum and seeing a bunch of unrelated mismatch like this is just another unofficial random troll forum where angry kids go to take it out on each other.

However, part of a community is allowing people to create a persona for themselves.

People tend to choose pictures that represent their character. Valour would not seem like Valour without some shitty anime pic from One Piece, and Arty wouldn't be Arty without a picture of a hot girl that may or may not be her.

My overall point is that since these 'persona-pictures' are usually quite permanent, a needed compromise is simply to allow people to submit a photo that will then be approved or disapproved.

Having only a selection of Sc2 or MA Themed pictures significantly takes away from the 'community' aspect. I have always felt that the BNET forums suffer from this. When you have hundreds of members we can't just all be varying forms of Archons.

People need something that others can remember, and associate their personality to. A restricted pool simply results in semi-anonymity.

first off, sorry for sounding like a brat about this issue today.

let me explain my position in more civil terms...

why it means something to me:
profile pictures are very personal, and other than the words we write on the forum, it is the only way we have of expressing ourselves. they convey the person's sense of humor (aktion/hiho), interests (pocky lol), or quicky things about their personality (arty). it also makes it very quick to identify people on the forum. and avatars can make you smile. '

selfish plug: i would also like to make a series of GIFs for people to use as avatars (if they want), and obviously i couldnt do that with the current rules

practical matters:
it makes perfect sense to limit the file size for server and page loading reasons. i think a reasonable limit could be agreed upon. the file format should not matter. and if certain avatars (perhaps arty?) are truly inappropriate, i would expect The Authorities to act.

final plea:
many people love their avatars, and in many of our opinions, taking them away from us doesnt make sense. they bring some amount of happiness to people, so please please please reconsider.

I would say you should put this to a vote but that would be considered fun or fair, so it would have to happen over on the big boy's forum.

This forum is better if you want to feel like you are posting from a submarine though, so there's that.

sorry guys, we are not ignoring this thread, just been a busy day. I am open for compromise. I do NOT speak for josin nor do I make the rules on any of this, however I don't think .gifs will make it into avatars, but i can help you make your case.

right now, any size avatar besides 100 x 150 is just undo-able, there is some hard coding involved so to change that size to smaller or bigger isn't an option, with that said if you want to plea your case to josin the best thing would be to make some .gifs of that size and submit them to this thread, show us the small filesize, show us they are acceptable. Currently any avatar anyone uses will have to be approved and uploaded to the server for anyone to use so keep that in mind.

User uploaded avatars will NOT happen.
However you can submit avatar images for Josin/Sonoma to add to the list.

Here are the Image Requirements:
  • Avatars have to be 100px wide and 150px tall.
  • Avatars have to be in JPEG (.jpg) format.
  • Avatars have to be StarCraft2 or Marine Arena themed.

NOTE: If you have a specific avatar that does not match the theme but you feel it is appropriate then PM it to me and I might approve it

Hey kim-jong-josin, maybe since people care about this, you could explain this, rather than just restate the very rule we are trying to argue about...you DID write that on april fools day, so I hope this is your sense of humor...

So why can't the rules be changed?

Josin, this is entirely your whim

Please listen to us, and please engage in a discussion instead of just restating your rules

We are discussing options.
I'm planning to lift the theme restriction.

Other stuff is still being discussed.

Josin, as long as the filesize is reasonable, you should allow gifs

Could it be set higher?

How did you decide on 40k?

Well we have 25 posts per page, we have to determine based on theoretically 25 different .gif avatars. ON TOP of that we have to take in the account of all the other additional content that the viewer has to load per page.

if the current avatars are around 30kb a piece, that's around 750kb per page. about 3/4 of a mb. which is nothing in todays internet speeds for people to dl off the site additionally. The goal is to keep the amount of content the viewer has to dl from each visited page to a minimum without making the page bland and removing all bells and whistles ect.

so if we did 40kb then thats 1000kb per page, knocking on a full mb's door. Still very very low.

we could do 60kb which comes out to about 1.5mb per page which is still low but I personally would like to keep it at no more than 1mb per page.

40k came from a properly done .gif that was compressed and optimized correctly to not cause more burden than it's worth. Like in the other thread I listed ken's avatar.

Image

which comes out at 46kb and 120x120, thats an ideal .gif compression.

Keep in mind, 25 posts per page, content in those posts such as images, videos, whatever on top of the additional images the site dishes out and it all adds rather quickly, it's why .info chokes in a lot of OT tread. Not to mention any animation also adds it's own burden to the browser as you scroll down the page.

another thing is, if we allow .gifs in avatars, I will remove the avatars from mchat.

Yeah this avatar lock thing is stupid. And they are all ugly too.

Seriously go look at the avatars on the old forum and see how interesting they were.

As long as it is static (non .gif) and not too large it should be allowed.
